Driver Chase Elliott is NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver for this year. But this is nothing new, at least to him.
The famed NASCAR driver was given the title by the car racing company on Thursday. Elliott received the title on one of the events during Champion’s Week. Determined through popular vote, NASCAR presents the award each year since it started 72 years ago.
But, this is nothing new to Chase Elliott. In fact, this is nothing new to the Elliott family of NASCAR drivers. This has been Chase’s fourth award in a row, which started back in 2017. But this pales in comparison when it comes to his father, Bill Elliott. The senior Elliott received the same award a whopping 16 times throughout his career. And, in those 16 awards, a 10-year repeat from 1991 to 2000. Chase Elliot, however, needs to grab the title for more than 10 years to break the record. Dale Earnhardt, the current record holder, won the award for 14 years straight.
Failed to Claim Championship
Although he’s this year’s most popular, he didn’t manage to snag the championship title. Elliot, who was the NASCAR Cup Series Champion last year, bravely defended his title this year by winning two races. The said wins earned him a spot in the Championship 4. Much to the dismay of his fans, he ended up in the fourth spot at the end of the season. His opponent, Kyle Larson, is this year’s champion.
So what’s next in store for this year’s most popular NASCAR driver? Bringing back the Cup Series to Nashville. Elliot has been very vocal about taking the spot back to Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. NASCAR never held a championship race in this speedway since 1984. To get more support, he calls upon those who want to make this happen to not “let off the gas before crossing the finish line.”
