Backbone Tubular Frame
Backbone tube frame is a construction that has a similar design to that of a unibody. While it’s already addressed that vehicle frames serve as the car’s backbone, car makers coined the term backbone because, well, it works as such. Unlike the ladder frame that has a two-dimensional structure, backbone frames have tubular “backbones” that attach the front towards the rear suspensions. There are many advantages that the backbone frames provide. One of the advantages is that the half axles of the frame have better contact with the ground. This design makes perfect vehicles for off-road driving. However, there are a few disadvantages. And one of them is that backbone frames are slightly heavier than most frames, making the vehicle stiff to maneuver. Also, tubular supports can’t give enough protection to side impacts.
If in space there is no weight, then this is what the frame is after. A space frame is another tubular chassis that attaches the suspension, panels, and engine to three-dimensional tube frames. When you own a full-size vehicle, it most likely has an x-frame. If a ladder has a straight frame design, the x-frame has a, well, an x-shaped design. The rails of the frame encompass each other from the part where the engine is located. The differential goes all the way down to the passenger compartment. The design successfully decreases the height of the car, no matter the size of the transmission and shaft humps. General Motors arguably used this design first for their American models from the late 1950s and early 1960s.
When the X-frame designed first came out to the public, people believed to have a more effective design for the chassis. However, X-frames lack side rails and, like the tubular frames, can’t provide protection against side collisions and impacts.
